Sony Power Bank CP- F10L Review Battery Pack

Hi, this is a review of the Sony 10,000 mAh Power Bank - model CP-F10L

The power bank uses Li- Polymer cells two of them 5000 mAh each, for those who are unaware there are two types of batteries usually used Li-Ion and Li- Ion Polymer also called as Li-polymer..

The later is more energy efficient and light weight but is costlier than Li-ion batteries.
The real capacity of this cell is about 67 % i.e. 6700 mAh - this loss is due to factors like "Voltage Conversions", "circuit resistance" and other variable factors.

It supports simultaneous charging of two devices with maximum 3.6 Ampere, so each port can easily output more than 1.5 Ampere.

If you’re not sure what this means - take a look at your native phone charger, it will have an Ampere rating ... let’s say it says 1.5 Ampere...
So as long as the power bank supports 1.5 A the charge time would almost be the same.... if the power bank can change at an higher ampere that the phone charger eg 2.0 A - the charge time would be reduced.
Conversely if the power bank has an Ampere rating that’s less than the native charger, the device would take a long time to charge or in some cases not charge at all.

This power bank can be charged using a regular DC 5.0 V charger or the USB interface of the computer.

I performed some tests using my Sony phone.

It took about 6 hrs and 45 minutes to completely charge the Power bank using a Sony phone charger @ 1.5 Ampere .

The power bank charged my Phone 1900 mAh battery in 1 hour 18 mins which was faster than my
native 1.5 Ampere charger.. possibly because it used an higher Ampere to charge it ...

The Standby time is more than 3 days after using it to charge the 1900 mAh battery twice...

It has Smart Led Indicators...... saves a lot of battery by avoiding flashy Displays.

And has certain safety measures like - Overcharge protection / Abnormal temperature detection - optimal
working temp. is between 10-30 degrees Celsius.

There are 2 LED's Green and Orange.

Orange
While charging the Orange light will glow... once the charge is completed it will stop glowing.... if it constantly blinks there’s a malfunction...

To check remaining power
Press the power button and observe the Orange light.
Flashes 3 times *2 battery full
Flashes 2 times *2 medium battery
Flashed 1 time * 2 low battery
No Flash empty battery.

Green-

While the power pack is being used to charge a device.
Constant green Glow battery full
Green led flashes slowly - low battery.
Green led flashes rapidly - malfunction.

Fake alert...
There are lot of fake power banks being sold , mainly on sites like ebay - the best way to spot one, is the price vs the battery capacity ,which is usually very cheap, other factors would be the packaging, weight etc..
A 10,000 mAh battery will definitely have a good weight to it, this one weighs 260 grams and it has an aluminium body.

  1. Hi Mark,

Thanks for the detailed review - this is very useful.

One important thing that you may be able to help is the retention of the battery.

This means after charging the powerbank for how long can it retain power - e.g. after one month after charging (and not using at all thereafter), can it still charge a phone?

This problem is faced by users who use the power bank infrequently and hence need longer retention.

    1. hi, when i was in Mumbai i had left the Power bank unused for about 3-4 days and still had about 1/2 the battery left (as per the led indicator) ... i'm presently using it in Manali and with about 2 charges of my phone + camera ie (2200 mAh and 1240 mAh) i still have about quarter battery left.... (this is after 2 days of traveling to reach my destination).. although this information is inadequate i hope it gives you an idea about the power banks retention ... i will be travelling further north and will report if i see the power bank suffering in higher altitudes....

  2. Hi mark thanks for your review I have a sony xperia c phone and i am planning to buy a power bank which will be better 5000mah or 10000mah I have heard a lot of negative & positive reviews of both so am confused can you help me out on which one to buy.

    1. 10000 isn't really that heavy honestly, since it's either Li-Po or Li now. The older Nickel-ion ones would definitely be much heavier.

  3. It depends upon your Phone usage and charging pattern, the Xperia C uses a 2390 mAh battery, so a 5000 mAh power bank should provide about 2 charges, as per reviews the Xperia C averages to about 10 hrs talk-time, so if you just need a power back up for daily use with your Phone, the 5000 mAh bank should do the job...... however if you use multiple devices depending upon their batter size you could consider a high capacity power bank... Hope this helps....

  4. Hi mark, thanks for the detailed review. does it have over voltage protection? & some powerbanks come with one month stand by time so in that case isnt this a drawback that the standby time of this is very less?

    1. Hi Ashish, it has a built in Overcharge prevention function and Abnormal temperature detection function which should safe guard it from Voltage Fluctuations, you can use a 5.0 V DC charger although it would only utilize about 4.2 V so no worries in-case the charger goes bad out of the blue.....although i would recommend using a tested functional charger .......
Where as StandBy time is concerned it depends on your needs... in most ideal cases you would not need a power bank with more than a few days of standby time, unless you plan to stay in a location with no electricity for weeks on end, in that case i would recommend a "Solar Charger" or PowerBanks with built in Solar Panels....i have tested my CP- F10L during my recent trip in the Himalayas and it performed well in the Cold and Heat.... although for regular daily use that's not really required ;)
      Cheers !!! Happy Holidays !!!

  5. HI markm thanks for your detailed review, does it have over voltage protection & isnt the powerbanks standby time very less compared to many other which has a standby of upto 30 days? what is the minimum capacity required for a powerbank to charge a laptop?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That would depend on the laptops battery capacity, most importantly the laptops Ampere rating since that would determine the charging speed or weather it would be able to charge or not...

  6. Hi,
I just went through the reviews, wanted to know more about it. I ordered CP-F10L from www.shopclues.com on 21st Jan 2015 and it got delivered to me today (27th Jan 2015). It is charging my Windows Phone and other i-Phone well but I have a doubt. While charging my phone it stays on Blue LED and the phone also gets charged but while charging the power bank with my regular phone charger (DC 5V, 1.0 A) the Orange LED and Blue LED keeps blinking one by one. I spoke to the seller who says that it is the behavior of the LEDs but rest the product has been tested and will work fine. I also checked that it is getting charged since I can feel the power bank is getting heated a bit while charging which seems to be correct. Is it not a genuine product which I have got? Please reply..

    1. As far as i remember there are 2 LED's Green and Orange.. refer to the section above for LEd Behaviors ....
Also check the paper work which came with the CP-F10L in-case sony updated this product the paper work should reflect the "Blue LED" along with what the flashing of the Led's indicate ....
In lines with it being fake or not, there's no definitive way to figure that out .... u could probably check if the mentioned weight matches.. mAh to Price ration.. etc ......anyways i checked the website and it's selling for 85 % off .that surprises me .... a product that cost more than 2.5 k being sold for less than 1 k is very fishy.....

    2. @Mark: I recently bought this product from Snapdeal.com, for 799INR. I also have same doubts, when I charge it with my laptop or regular charger, the orange and blue light keeps blinking one by one.
There's no paper or manual along with the product, I couldn't find the serial number on the product. What should I do?

    3. @Nagi: Is it still working fine, after 6 months of your purchase?

    4. @Shubham, if its a fake id recommend getting a refund... asap.... a proper retail pack will have a user manual and should also adhere to the Led color codes mentioned in this post... hope this helps ..Cheers..

    1. Hi Jatin, sorry to hear about your experience, if you have already gone through the user manual and sufficiently charged the power bank, chances are you may have been sold a faulty or fake product, i would recommend checking with the website; if you can get a replacement or repair, also it's always a good idea to choose websites that have a good rating and standing, in all probability you would be paying more for the product, but that because a genuine product will cost more than a rip off... All the best ..thank you for sharing your experience..

  8. Hi mark i bought a Sony 10000mah cheap frm ebay n frm d first charge it keeps blinking red.ebay is refunding me but is there a way to repair it or open it n check it?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's good that they are refunding it, although if it's opened or damaged while opening they might not proceed with the refund... as far as i know besides the actual battery pack there should be a circuit board which can be tinkered with, but if the fault is with the actual battery then there's nothing much that can be done...

  13. I just bought Sony 5000mah charger. And tried to charge it for the first time. Charging it for almost hours while waiting the orange light to stop but really did not. It was too long and decided to disconnect it. I checked the battery and it's full. Is there any problem w/ it and need to bring it back to the shop?
Because i really wanted to see it automatically turn off when fully charged so i dont need to keep checking and waiting.

    1. 5 leds ? are you referring to another power bank.. anyways do the regular troubleshooting, check if it works with other devices, if it does then its probably a compatibility issue, if the power bank doesn't charge any devices then look at the warranty or get it fixed from an expert... cheers....
